Inspiration Sprouts on Saturday at F5 Fest

Day 2 at F5 Fest was even more inspiring than the first—a seemingly impossible feat. The day began with yet another round of the happy-themed, naughty puppet-clad opening titles created by the very talented, Buck. Adam Sadowsky of Syyn Labs, the first speaker of the morning, gave a detailed run through of the making of OK GO’s “This Too Shall Pass” music video.

The next speakers to grace the stage were Adult Swim’s Creative Director Jacob Escobedo and his unique “severed goat head” perspective (relating to an idea that has a memorable artistic quality) followed by Radical Friend, a duo responsible for some highly impressive visually stimulating interactive art, videos and installations.

The Meta Agency’s very own Eclectic Method slayed the stage while getting the audience hyped with some live remixing and glimmers of their full set approaching that evening.

Scott Belsky spoke about the creative process, most specifically identifying with the persona of a Dreamer, a Doer or an Incrementalist and using that knowledge to transform ideas into creations. Next, Nathan Love gave a charming detailed look at how they go about turning an unspecific brief into a vivid, imaginative and “design-y” animation. Shantall Martin highlighted her journey from London to Japan to the states with projector and tablet in tow and her wildly unique Hidden Ora performances.

After a final “drink break” we stumbled into the final leg of the conference—they might have been the last, but they definitely were not the least. Buck and Antfood took the stage to go over the making of their title video complete with commentary from one of the stars (an adorable, wise puppet) and a blooper reel that had the audience in stitches. Mark Romanek, director of an array of mind blowing music videos including some from Michael Jackson, Madonna and Johnny Cash (and films One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go) conducted an interview style session explaining his influences and experiences and gave a live commentary for a scene in Never Let Me Go. Wayne White concluded the day with a collective of his three-time Emmy award winning work introduced by Todd Oldham.

All in all, F5 Fest was a seriously fun and creatively stimulating experience. We had a blast!
